Artemisinins kill parasites more effectively and at an earlier stage in the erythrocytic
part of its life cycle than most of the other anti-malarial currently in use. They
also kill the gametocyte stage and may contribute to interrupting transmission. They
do not work on the exo-erythrocytic forms, hence do not prevent relapses in P. vivax or P. ovale.
